Arsenal Dominates Ipswich 4-2 in EFL Cup: Dowman Shines with Brace
Arsenal secured their place in the EFL Cup last 16 with a comfortable 4-2 win against Ipswich Town. Teenage sensation Max Dowman scored twice in the victory.
Manager Mikel Arteta fielded a largely changed squad from their previous Premier League match, yet the Gunners maintained their flawless start to the season.
Sixteen-year-old Dowman impressed with a brace. His first goal came in the seventh minute, a solo effort following a quick exchange with Eberechi Eze. Noni Madueke capitalized on a defensive lapse to double the lead. Dowman then added his second, and Mikel Merino scored his first goal of the season, effectively sealing the win.
Anis Mehmeti managed to pull one back for Ipswich, and Chuba Akpom scored in stoppage time, but these goals offered little solace as Ipswich's attention returns to league play.
Dowman's opener showcased his skill: he intercepted the ball in midfield, received a return pass, faked out a defender, and powerfully finished into the bottom-left corner.
Madueke extended the lead with a powerful half-volley into the same corner, capitalizing on a lofted pass from Mikel Merino after Bruno Guimaraes had forced another defensive mistake.
Ipswich missed a chance to reduce the deficit when Mehmeti volleyed over from close range. This proved costly when, early in the second half, Dowman struck again, latching onto a precise pass from Martin Zumbimendi.
Merino then made it four, firing in off the post from the edge of the box. Ipswich responded quickly, with Mehmeti finding the net after good build-up play down the left from substitute Jack Clarke.
Ipswich had the final word when Akpom controlled a pass from Leif Davis and his shot deflected in off Myles Lewis-Skelly. However, the night belonged to Dowman.
