Tamarack Resort: A Destination for All Seasons
After a slow winter start for West-Central Idaho's ski season due to low snowfall, late March storms brought a welcome boost. Now, attention turns to the upcoming summer season at Tamarack Resort, highlighted by the May 23rd opening of the Osprey Meadows Golf Course and the introduction of a new 100-slip marina.
Situated 90 miles north of Boise, Tamarack Resort spans 3,600 acres and stands out as the only U.S. destination offering skiing, golfing, and boating all from a single location. The resort recently concluded a significant $200 million revitalization project, which included the full restoration of the Robert Trent Jones II-designed Osprey Meadows Golf Course and the construction of a brand-new marina on Lake Cascade.
Gabe Navarro, managing partner at MMG Equity Partners and a key owner/developer of Tamarack Resort, emphasized the marina's critical role: "The marina is fundamental to Tamarack's identity as a comprehensive four-season destination," he stated. He highlighted Lake Cascade as one of the region's most stunning alpine lakes, noting that direct access via the marina seamlessly blends water-based activities into the overall Tamarack experience. Navarro added that the marina significantly reinforces Tamarack's unique appeal as a mountain, lake, and golf hub, resonating deeply with visitors. It unlocks opportunities for boating, paddle sports, fishing, and lakeside gatherings, offering guests another compelling reason to return during the summer. He believes that the resort's blend of mountain, lake, and golf experiences is a rarity.
Located within Idaho's Payette River Mountains, Tamarack provides diverse offerings including recreation, real estate, vacation rentals, event venues, and a charming alpine-style village. Winters boast 2,800 vertical feet across 1,530 acres of skiable terrain, alongside extensive Nordic and snowshoe trails. During summer, the resort expands its activities to include golf, mountain biking, ziplining, hiking, rafting, and a variety of watersports on Lake Cascade.
Navarro further detailed the impact of recent investments, explaining, "Over the past few years, we've poured substantial resources into rejuvenating the village, upgrading infrastructure, expanding amenities, and enriching the overall guest experience." He observed that visitors appreciate these improvements, from new residential options and enhanced dining to expanded recreational activities and inviting community areas. For Navarro, the most gratifying feedback comes from long-time guests who now feel Tamarack has truly realized its full potential.
Acknowledging Tamarack's swift seasonal transitions, Navarro commented, "One of Tamarack’s distinctive features is how quickly we move between seasons. Our teams are dedicated to ensuring a smooth shift — from skiing and snow sports to golf, mountain biking, lake activities, and hiking." He noted the focus this year has been on sustaining strong winter offerings while simultaneously enhancing summer momentum. "It's encouraging to see more people recognizing Tamarack as a year-round destination, rather than just a single-season resort," he added.
The 2024 renovation of Osprey Meadows further solidifies Tamarack's reputation as a premier golf destination. Situated almost 5,000 feet above sea level, the course stretches 7,447 yards from the longest tees, offering five distinct teeing options. Navarro explained that the renovation not only improved playability but also committed to environmental preservation, safeguarding wetlands, native trees, beaver habitats, and historical bald eagle nesting sites. A striking feature of the course is that nearly 70 percent of its fairways and greens incorporate water elements.
Robert Trent Jones II ingeniously designed Osprey Meadows with two distinct nines. The front nine gracefully navigates through a landscape of lakes, wetlands, streams, vibrant wildflower meadows, and serene aspen groves. In contrast, the back nine ascends into towering ponderosa pines, presenting breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Cascade. The course masterfully integrates waterfalls, island-style greens, challenging doglegs, split fairways, and picturesque boardwalk bridges, crafting an immersive journey through a pristine wilderness.
Enhancing the golfing experience is "The Gambler," a distinctive 19th-hole par-3 often used for a "double or nothing" finish, providing a memorable conclusion to a round. Additionally, the resort features a sprawling 23,000-square-foot social and putting green, reputedly the largest of its kind in the region.
"Osprey Meadows is truly among the most spectacular mountain golf courses in the Northwest," affirmed Navarro. He praised its design for expertly leveraging the natural topography, resulting in numerous holes offering unparalleled vistas of Lake Cascade and the surrounding mountains. As part of the resort's broader revitalization, significant efforts have been made to elevate every aspect of the golf experience, from course maintenance to the clubhouse facilities and guest amenities. The overarching objective, Navarro concluded, is to ensure the course's quality perfectly complements its magnificent world-class setting.
